Counselling can be life changing.  Changes come gradually, and they come through work.  Like life, counselling isn’t always easy and it’s not a quick fix.  Therapy is a commitment and it’s an investment in your life and your relationship.  When you’re ready to start counselling here’s what to expect from your first counselling session and what follows.

First Counselling Session

The first counselling session is called an assessment.  Although this sounds clinical, it’s really just an opportunity for us to meet. You may feel nervous or awkward and this is perfectly normal.  You can begin to get to know me, and my way of working to see if I might be a counsellor you would like to work with.

The session is also a time for me to get to know you.  I will ask you some questions about you and the problem(s) you are facing.  I will explain to you more about confidentiality, my fees, cancellation policy and the way I work.  Most of all there will be time for you to ask me questions.

We will then be able to decide if my counselling practice is right for you and you can decide if you would like to have more sessions.  There is no need to continue if you decide not to.

Future Counselling Sessions

For subsequent sessions, we would meet weekly ideally on the same day and at the same time each week.

What happens in the sessions depends on how we have agreed to work together and what you want out of the sessions. They might be focused on a goal that you have in mind or be more free flowing.  What all sessions have in common is that they are a chance for you to talk about the things that you want to talk about.  I listen mindfully to what you say, reflect back, at times ask questions and support you to understand and make meaning of your experiences.

The sessions are a space to reflect on your past, present and future.

Past experiences have a direct impact on the relationship you have with yourself and how you relate to the world.  These experiences may be forgotten or you may think they are not that important, but the inner attitudes developed as a result live on.  Whilst you can’t change your story, it is possible to change your present attitude towards it.  When you are conscious of your past you can understand and respect your present self.   With awareness also comes choice. When you make fully conscious and effective choices you can better handle the dilemmas and challenges that life brings.

I offer you the creative tools to soulfully reconnect with lost parts of you.  These include drawing, dreams, meditation, visualisation, poetry, music and story-telling.

After a Counselling Session

You may notice a number of feelings after a session.  You may feel sad, vulnerable, worse than before starting the sessions, enlightened, inspired or relieved.  Whatever it is, the invitation is to be kind to yourself and talk your feelings through in the sessions.

Endings

The counselling sessions are about you, and you are free to choose when you want to end the sessions.  You will probably know when the time is right.  However, it’s a good idea to think about why you want to end and be willing to explore this in the sessions as opposed to ending via text or email.

A clear, direct, planned ending – even if difficult – can be very therapeutic and is a good relationship skill.
