Clarity at a Relationship Crossroads
When you are at a crossroads in your relationship, you don’t know whether to stay, leave, or pause before making a significant decision.
These moments affect far more than the relationship itself; they touch your well-being, values, family life, financial security, and sense of self.
Discernment Counselling offers a calm, structured space to understand what is happening in your relationship and to clarify what feels possible next.
In my work, Discernment Counselling sits alongside depth psychology and relational, integrative practice. I support individuals and couples at key relationship crossroads, shaping the structure of the work to what is needed rather than following a fixed model.
This work does not assume repair.
It does not push towards separation.
Its purpose is clarity.
You don’t need to arrive with answers, only the willingness to think honestly about what matters for your relationship.
Who Discernment Counselling Is For
This approach is helpful if:
- you feel uncertain about the future of your relationship
- one of you is unsure about staying, while the other wants to continue
- there has been infidelity, secrecy, or emotional distance
- communication feels difficult or disconnected
- you don’t want to rush a decision you might regret later
- you want to understand what repair would require before choosing it
- you value fairness and conscious decision-making
It’s an opportunity to slow down, look at the relationship without pressure, and consider what feels right for both of you, one step at a time.
Who Discernment Counselling Is Not For
Discernment Counselling is not suitable when:
- both partners are ready to begin therapy and rebuild (couples therapy is more appropriate)
- one partner has already decided to end the relationship and is seeking confirmation
- there are current safety risks or coercive control (a different support structure is needed)
If you’re unsure whether any of these apply, you are welcome to enquire and ask.
What Makes Discernment Counselling Different
Unlike couples therapy, Discernment Counselling is not designed to solve problems or improve the relationship itself. Instead, it helps you:
- understand what has led you here
- explore whether real change is possible
- recognise what repair would require from each person
- decide whether you both feel able and willing to take that path
- make a considered decision about your next step
You will not be expected to work on your relationship during this process. The focus is on understanding before acting.
What to Expect in the Process
Discernment Counselling is brief and structured, lasting up to 5 sessions.
You do not have to complete all five sessions if clarity is reached sooner.
Each session includes time together as a couple, and time separately with me. This helps each partner speak freely, without pressure or persuasion.
Session Structure
Session One (120 minutes):
We explore what has brought you to this point, how each of you sees the relationship, and the options ahead. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of the three possible paths: remain as you are, separate thoughtfully, or begin couples therapy with commitment.
Sessions Two to Five (90 minutes each):
We explore what has happened, what would need to change, and whether both of you feel willing and able to engage in that change. You will gain clarity about what continuation or separation would involve, emotionally and practically.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this therapy?
No. Discernment Counselling is not therapy and does not focus on repairing the relationship. It supports couples in deciding whether to separate or begin therapy with commitment.
What if one of us wants to work on the relationship and the other isn’t sure?
This process is designed specifically for mixed-agenda couples — one unsure, one more ready to repair. Each partner has space to speak openly without being persuaded or pushed.
What happens afterwards?
There are three possibilities:
- you choose to stay as you are, with clarity
- you choose to separate thoughtfully
- or you begin couples therapy with commitment
If you choose therapy, we can discuss whether continuing together makes sense or whether a referral would be more appropriate.
Can I enquire on my own?
Yes. One partner is welcome to make the initial enquiry.
Discernment Counselling is a couples process and requires the participation of both partners. We begin with individual assessment sessions for each of you, allowing me to understand your perspectives separately before moving into any joint work.
If your partner is not willing to engage at this stage, this approach may not be suitable.
Begin the Process
If you’re at a relationship crossroads and unsure what kind of support is needed, the next step is a Discernment Assessment.
This involves an individual session with each partner, allowing for a clear understanding of your situation before deciding how best to proceed.
