3 Steps to Finding Clarity While Stuck in Relationship Limbo
Finding clarity in a disconnected relationship can feel elusive, like trying to catch smoke in your hand.
It’s tough to face a marital crossroads, that space where you feel caught between staying and fighting for your relationship or walking away to find longed-for peace.
All that uncertainty is draining and can leave you feeling even further disconnected from your partner and yourself.
If this resonates with you, I want you to know you’re not alone.
There’s a way forward. When you approach this crossroads with curiosity instead of fear, the path toward clarity becomes a little more straightforward.
What to Do When You’re at a Marital Crossroads
Here are three essential steps to focus on when you’re at a crossroads and unsure if the time has come to leave the relationship.
Step One: Reconnecting with Yourself
When you’re stuck, it’s easy to get lost in the noise of what you don’t want. This first step is about helping you turn inward, find clarity around your needs, wants, and desires, and learn to trust your inner voice. Self-awareness helps reduce fear and builds the confidence to make decisions that align with your values and authenticity.
Some may think that focusing on oneself is problematic. But that’s not true. This intentional and exploratory curiosity about oneself is all part of differentiation. Differentiation is how we know and articulate our authentic selves, allowing our partners to do the same while nurturing our relationship. That will not always be easy, but the starting point is knowing ourselves so we can share and love ourselves.
This is where archetypes and shadow work are powerful tools to facilitate differentiation. Shadow work challenges what we believe we know about ourselves by helping us explore the parts of ourselves that we might not see clearly. When we uncover what’s hiding in plain sight and learn from it, decision-making becomes easier, and we are on the path to finding clarity in a relationship.
Step Two: Understanding Your Relationship & Your Part
No two relationships are the same. Our childhoods, social expectations, attachment styles, trauma, and cultural norms shape them in many different ways.
Most couples also go through predictable transitions. Understanding this alone can facilitate a significant shift in perspective.
It’s easy to point fingers and blame your partner, but we often don’t recognise what we bring to the table regarding the disconnection in the marriage.
The truth is, while not all relationships are an even split, very few are 0:100. Our unconscious is often driving the bus. We need to compassionately and honestly own our part. Projection (what we disown in ourselves but see in others) and transference (when we see our partner as someone else from our past) are part and parcel of relationships.
Even if our part is just one percent, leaning into that one percent has immeasurable possibilities for personal growth and healing relationship pain.
Step Three: Act with Courage and Trust
Over To You
Finding clarity in a relationship and these steps don’t have to take years to navigate. Sometimes, all it takes is the right questions, asked at the right time, to unlock clarity and open the door to change. That’s where marriage clarity coaching comes in.
